Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an OT technologist and an anaesthesia technologist?▾
They work in the same theatre but to different clinicians. An operation theatre technologist works with the surgical team — scrub and circulating duties, instrument sets, the sterile field, swab and instrument counts, and decontamination. An anaesthesia technologist works with the anaesthetist — the anaesthetic machine and circuits, airway equipment, monitoring and drugs. Many people are trained in both, and if you are, say so: breadth helps almost everywhere, and it matters a great deal for the UK route.
Which qualifications are accepted for theatre technologist licensing?▾
A recognised BSc or diploma in operation theatre technology, a combined anaesthesia and OT technology programme, or a perioperative or surgical technology qualification with substantial supervised clinical training. Authorities look at the content and the clinical hours rather than the certificate title, so the programme detail and your theatre logs are what actually answer the question.
Is there a UK register for scrub technicians?▾
Not as a separate profession. The UK regulates this work under the HCPC protected title Operating Department Practitioner, which covers scrub, anaesthetics and recovery together. So a UK application is not just about your scrub practice — you need to evidence the anaesthetic and recovery sides too. We will tell you honestly how your record looks against that before you apply.
What should my theatre logbook show?▾
Ideally the specialties you have scrubbed in, approximate case volumes, your level of independence, and the date ranges. A supervisor or departmental letter that describes your actual scrub caseload is far stronger than a generic service certificate. If you still have access to your logbooks, keep copies now — people routinely find they cannot get them once they have left a hospital.
Do Gulf authorities license theatre technologists separately from nurses?▾
Yes. Theatre nursing and theatre technology are different professional categories with different requirements, and you are licensed under the category your qualification supports. This is worth settling early, because the category determines your scope, your exam and often your grade.
Can I work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi on the same licence?▾
No — DHA covers Dubai, DOH covers Abu Dhabi, SHA covers Sharjah and MOH covers the other emirates, each with its own application and exam. Deciding which emirate you are targeting before you start saves paying for the wrong process.
