Operating department practice is where Zlado sees the most title confusion. In India the roles are usually called anaesthesia technologist, OT technologist or perioperative technician; in the UK the single protected title is operating department practitioner. HCPC is not assessing the job title on your certificate — it is assessing whether your training covered all three phases of perioperative care.
Protected titles: “Operating department practitioner”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

All three perioperative phases
UK ODP training covers anaesthetics, surgery (scrub) and post-anaesthetic recovery. An applicant trained mainly in anaesthesia support, with little scrub or recovery practice, is the classic gap HCPC picks up. Evidence of all three is what makes an ODP file work.
Anaesthetic assistance
Preparation and checking of anaesthetic equipment, airway management assistance, monitoring, and support during induction, maintenance and emergence — documented as supervised practice, not just coursework.
Scrub and circulating practice
Instrument handling, aseptic technique, swab and instrument counts, and support to the surgical team. Theatre logs or a departmental letter describing your scrub caseload carry real weight here.
Post-anaesthetic recovery
Airway management, monitoring and handover in recovery. This is the phase most often missing from overseas training records, so evidence it explicitly if you have it.

I am an anaesthesia technologist in India. Can I register as an ODP?▾
Many do. The title differs but the underlying practice often overlaps substantially. The deciding factor is whether your training and experience covered anaesthetics, scrub and recovery — UK ODP practice spans all three, and a purely anaesthesia-focused record is the most common shortfall. We look at exactly that in your eligibility check.
Is a BSc in Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology enough?▾
A recognised BSc in Anaesthesia Technology, OT Technology or a combined perioperative programme with substantial supervised clinical training is the usual starting point. Diploma-level qualifications are harder, though experience can sometimes strengthen the picture. It is worth checking before you spend anything on the application.
What evidence should I collect for the scrub and recovery gaps?▾
A departmental or supervisor letter that specifically describes your scrub caseload and your recovery-room duties, ideally with approximate volumes and date ranges, is far more useful than a generic service certificate. If you have theatre logbooks, keep them — they are hard to reconstruct later.
What English requirement applies to ODPs?▾
The same general HCPC standard: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, within HCPC’s validity window. We confirm the current requirement when we check your eligibility.
Where do ODPs work in the UK?▾
Predominantly NHS operating theatres, plus day-surgery units, emergency departments, intensive care and private hospital groups. It is a role with steady demand, and the scope is broader than many overseas applicants expect.
Is ODP the same as a theatre nurse in the UK?▾
No. They are separate professions with separate regulators — ODPs register with HCPC, nurses with the NMC. Both work in theatres, and the roles overlap in practice, but the registration routes are entirely different.
