HCPC registration for practitioner psychologists
Practitioner psychology is regulated by specialism. HCPC protects a set of specific titles, and you register under the one your training and supervised practice actually support — not under “psychologist” generally, which is not itself a protected title. The UK benchmark for clinical psychology in particular is doctoral-level training with extensive supervised practice, which is the main hurdle for internationally qualified applicants.
Protected titles: “Practitioner psychologist”, plus specialism titles such as “Clinical psychologist”, “Counselling psychologist”, “Educational psychologist”, “Forensic psychologist”, “Health psychologist”, “Occupational psychologist” and “Sport and exercise psychologist”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

Which specialism you register under
Clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, health, occupational, or sport and exercise psychology. Each has its own standards, and your evidence has to fit the one you apply under.
Level and length of training
UK clinical psychology training is doctoral-level, typically three years post-graduate, integrating academic work, research and supervised placements. An MPhil or MA in clinical psychology from another system is assessed against that benchmark.

Can an Indian MPhil in Clinical Psychology lead to HCPC registration?▾
An RCI-recognised MPhil in Clinical Psychology is the strongest Indian qualification for this route, but it is assessed against a UK doctoral benchmark that is longer and structured differently. Some applicants succeed, others are told further training or supervised practice is needed. This is a route where an honest assessment before you apply saves real money.
Is “psychologist” a protected title in the UK?▾
“Psychologist” on its own is not protected. The protected titles are “practitioner psychologist” and the specialism titles — clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, health, occupational, and sport and exercise psychologist. Using one of those without registration is an offence.
Which specialism should I apply under?▾
The one your training and supervised practice genuinely evidence. Applying under a specialism your placements do not support is a common and expensive mistake, so it is the first thing we settle in an eligibility check.
Does RCI registration help with an HCPC application?▾
It is not an HCPC requirement, but a current RCI registration and good-standing certificate is useful supporting evidence of your professional standing and easy to include.
What English requirement applies to practitioner psychologists?▾
The general HCPC standard: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, within HCPC’s validity window. Given how language-dependent psychological practice is, we would treat a comfortable margin above the minimum as sensible rather than optional.
What if my qualification is assessed as not equivalent?▾
The usual outcome is an indication of what further training or supervised practice would be needed, rather than a flat refusal. Knowing that early lets you plan a realistic route instead of reapplying without changing anything.
