HCPC registration for chiropodists and podiatrists
Chiropodist and podiatrist are two protected titles for the same HCPC-regulated profession. UK podiatry has a broader clinical scope than the equivalent role in many countries — including nail surgery under local anaesthesia and high-risk diabetic foot management — and that scope is what an international application is assessed against.
Protected titles: “Chiropodist” and “Podiatrist”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

The Standards of Proficiency are profession-specific — these are the areas that decide most chiropodists and podiatrists files.
Clinical scope of your training
UK podiatry covers assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the foot and lower limb, including surgical and pharmacological intervention. Training limited to routine foot care evidences a much narrower scope.
Local anaesthesia and nail surgery
Administration of local anaesthesia and minor nail surgery are standard parts of UK podiatric practice. Documented supervised training in these is a strong differentiator.
Diabetic foot and high-risk management

Is there a difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?▾
Not in practice — they are two protected titles for the same HCPC-regulated profession. “Podiatrist” is the more current term in UK usage; both are protected, and registration covers both.
My training did not include local anaesthesia. Does that block registration?▾
It does not automatically block it, but it narrows the scope your training evidences against UK practice, and it can prompt questions. Documenting whatever surgical or pharmacological training you did have, including post-qualification courses, is worth doing.
Does an Indian podiatry or foot-care qualification qualify?▾
Podiatry is a small and relatively recent field in India, and programmes vary widely in clinical scope. This is one where an honest eligibility check first is genuinely worth it — the answer depends far more on your programme content than on the certificate title.
What English requirement applies to podiatrists?▾
The general HCPC standard: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, within HCPC’s validity window. We confirm the current requirement during your eligibility check.
Where do podiatrists work in the UK?▾
NHS community and acute podiatry services — with diabetic foot services a major area — plus private practice, which is a significant part of this profession in the UK.
What documents matter most for a podiatry application?▾
