Orthoptics is a small, specialised HCPC profession focused on eye movement, binocular vision and visual development disorders. It is distinct from optometry, and one of the first things to establish is whether your qualification maps to orthoptics as the UK defines it or to a broader optometry or ophthalmic technician role.
Protected titles: “Orthoptist”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

Orthoptic scope, not optometry
UK orthoptics centres on binocular vision, strabismus, amblyopia and eye movement disorders. Optometry and general ophthalmic assistant training map to different professions and, in optometry’s case, a different regulator.

A large share of UK orthoptic work is with children — vision screening, amblyopia management and developmental assessment. Documented paediatric caseload is important evidence.
Diagnostic assessment skills

Is an optometry degree enough to register as an orthoptist?▾
No — they are different professions in the UK with different regulators. Optometrists register with the General Optical Council; orthoptists register with HCPC. If your training was optometry, the GOC route is the one to look at.
Does a BSc in Ophthalmic Technology qualify for orthoptist registration?▾
It depends entirely on content. Programmes that include substantial binocular vision, strabismus and orthoptic assessment training map more closely than those weighted towards refraction or ophthalmic assisting. A module-wise syllabus is the document that answers this.
What evidence matters most for an orthoptics application?▾
A clinical logbook naming the assessments you performed — cover tests, motility, prism measurement, stereopsis — with supervision levels and settings. Scope is what is being assessed, so scope-specific documentation is what counts.
What English requirement applies to orthoptists?▾
