Dietetics is where the distinction between a nutrition qualification and a dietetics qualification really matters. HCPC registers dietitians — clinicians who assess and treat patients — and a degree weighted towards food science or public health nutrition, without supervised clinical dietetic practice, is the single most common reason an application struggles.
Protected titles: “Dietitian” and “Dietician”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

Clinical dietetic practice, not nutrition theory
Supervised practice assessing and managing patients in a clinical setting is the core requirement. Community nutrition or food service experience alone rarely evidences it.
Supervised placement hours
A documented dietetic internship covering clinical, community and food service components. Indian MSc Dietetics and post-graduate diploma routes vary widely here, so the placement record does the heavy lifting.
Therapeutic diet management
Evidence of managing patients across conditions — diabetes, renal, gastrointestinal, oncology, critical care, paediatrics — rather than general dietary counselling.

Enteral and parenteral nutrition support is a routine part of UK hospital dietetics and is often underdocumented in overseas records.

Is an MSc in Nutrition and Dietetics enough for HCPC registration?▾
It depends heavily on what the programme contained. A qualification with substantial supervised clinical dietetic placement is what these applications rest on; one weighted towards food science, public health nutrition or research, with little patient-facing practice, is much harder. A module-wise syllabus and your placement records are the documents that answer this.
What is the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian for HCPC?▾
“Dietitian” is a protected title on the HCPC register — using it without registration is an offence in the UK. “Nutritionist” is not HCPC-regulated. This is why the clinical dietetic component of your training is what the assessment focuses on.
What placement evidence should I gather?▾
A placement certificate naming hours and settings, plus letters from clinical supervisors describing the patient groups you managed. Generic experience letters that say only that you worked as a dietitian tend not to answer the question being asked.
What English requirement applies to dietitians?▾
The general HCPC standard: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, within HCPC’s validity window. We confirm the current requirement during your eligibility check.
Where do dietitians work in the UK?▾
NHS acute and community services, specialist areas such as renal, oncology, diabetes and critical care, plus private practice and the food industry. Newly registered dietitians typically enter the NHS at Band 5.
Can I register if my clinical experience came after graduating?▾
Post-qualification clinical practice can strengthen a file considerably, particularly where the placement component of your degree was limited. It needs to be properly documented by employers — role, duration, patient groups and level of supervision.
