🇬🇧United KingdomHCPC / AHCS

HCPC as a hearing aid dispenser, or the healthcare science route for NHS audiology

AssessmentWorth being straight about this one: the UK has no register called “audiologist”. There are two different doors. HCPC registers the protected title hearing aid dispenser, which is assessment, fitting and aftercare, and is mostly private-sector high-street work. NHS audiology sits under the healthcare science framework instead, usually through equivalence with the Academy for Healthcare Science rather than a direct HCPC application. Which door fits you depends on your qualification and what you actually want to do, so it is worth settling before you spend anything.
EnglishIELTS Academic 7.0 with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B, for the HCPC route

How the journey works

Whichever country you choose, the shape is the same. We guide you through each level and help you prepare what the regulator asks for.

1Free · ~15 min

Pick the country

A guided conversation about where you want to work. For audiology this matters more than most professions, because the Gulf licenses audiologists directly while the UK splits the work across two different routes.

2Free

Confirm your title

A guided check of your BASLP, MASLP or audiology qualification against the title your target authority actually licenses, so you apply under the right category the first time.

3Guided

Verification and exam

Guidance through DataFlow or equivalent verification, then preparation for the licensing exam — pure tone audiometry and masking, tympanometry, speech testing, hearing aid selection and verification, and paediatric assessment.

4Guided

Documents and licence

Guidance on which of your own documents that authority wants and in what format, including the clinical records that evidence your assessment and fitting caseload.

Looking for the roles themselves?

Registration is one half of the move; the job is the other. Our overseas jobs page lists the openings we are currently aware of, and you can start the registration side in parallel.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian BASLP or MASLP graduate work abroad as an audiologist?

For the Gulf, yes — DHA, DOH, MOH, SCFHS, DHP and NHRA all license audiology as its own profession, and a recognised BASLP or MASLP with supervised clinical practice is the usual basis. A masters generally classifies you at a higher category than a bachelors, particularly with SCFHS. For the UK the picture is different, and worth reading the UK route above carefully.

Why is there no HCPC audiologist registration?

Because the UK divides this work differently. HCPC has a protected title for hearing aid dispenser — assessment, hearing aid selection, fitting, verification and aftercare, mostly in the private sector. NHS audiology, which is broader and includes diagnostics and rehabilitation, sits under the healthcare science framework instead, normally reached through an equivalence process rather than a direct HCPC application. Neither is a straight swap for an overseas audiology degree, so we would rather set that expectation early.

Which is faster for audiologists, the Gulf or the UK?

The Gulf, in almost every case. It licenses audiology directly, the sequence is well trodden — verification, exam, licence — and there is no separate English test for most titles. The UK involves deciding between two different routes first, an English test, and for the healthcare science path a portfolio-based equivalence process that is measured in months.

What clinical evidence should I gather?

Records that name what you actually did, not just where you worked: the audiometric tests you performed, whether you did masking, tympanometry and speech testing, your paediatric caseload if you have one, and the number and type of hearing aid fittings you completed. Fitting volume is the evidence most often missing from overseas records, and it is the one that matters most for the UK dispensing route.

Does RCI registration help with an overseas application?

It is not required by any of these authorities, but a current Rehabilitation Council of India registration and a good-standing certificate is straightforward supporting evidence of your professional standing, and it is much easier to obtain while it is still active than to revive later.

Do I need a job offer before applying for a Gulf audiology licence?

It varies. In the UAE the licence and the employer are fairly closely linked, and in Kuwait the route is usually employer-led, so an offer often comes early in the sequence. In Saudi Arabia the classification step can begin independently. You can start the verification side now either way, and current roles we are aware of are on our overseas jobs page.
