HCPC registration for prosthetists and orthotists
Prosthetics and orthotics is regulated by HCPC under two protected titles, and in UK practice it is a clinical role — assessing patients, prescribing and fitting devices, and reviewing outcomes — rather than a purely technical or fabrication one. Where overseas training was weighted towards workshop fabrication, that difference in emphasis is what the assessment focuses on.
Protected titles: “Prosthetist” and “Orthotist”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.
What HCPC looks at in a prosthetist or orthotist application
The Standards of Proficiency are profession-specific — these are the areas that decide most prosthetists and orthotists files.
Clinical assessment and prescription
UK prosthetists and orthotists assess patients, determine the appropriate device and prescribe it. Training that covered fabrication but little patient assessment evidences a narrower scope.
Both prosthetics and orthotics
UK programmes typically cover both. Where your training or practice was heavily weighted to one, documenting whatever exposure you have to the other is worth the effort.

Frequently asked questions
Are prosthetist and orthotist separate registrations?▾
They are two protected titles regulated by HCPC. UK training typically covers both, and many practitioners work across the two, but the titles are distinct and your evidence needs to support whichever you register under.
Does a BPO from India qualify for HCPC registration?▾
A recognised Bachelor in Prosthetics and Orthotics with substantial supervised clinical training is the usual starting point. The assessment looks at whether your training covered clinical patient assessment and prescription, not only device fabrication.
My work has been mostly fabrication. Is that a problem?▾
It narrows what your record evidences against a UK clinical scope. It does not rule you out, but documenting any patient assessment, fitting and review work you have done becomes important, as does any post-qualification clinical practice.
What English requirement applies to prosthetists and orthotists?▾
The general HCPC standard: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, within HCPC’s validity window. We confirm the current requirement during your eligibility check.
Where do prosthetists and orthotists work in the UK?▾
NHS disablement services centres and orthotic departments, plus a substantial private and contracted sector supplying NHS services. It is a small profession with specialised, steady demand.
Is RCI registration relevant here?▾
Prosthetics and orthotics is an RCI-registered profession in India, and while HCPC does not require it, a current registration and good-standing certificate is straightforward supporting evidence of your professional standing.
