HCPC registration for clinical scientists
Clinical science is the HCPC profession with the most distinctive route. Rather than a direct application in most cases, internationally trained applicants normally establish equivalence through the Academy for Healthcare Science first, and register with HCPC on the strength of that. It is a portfolio-based process, and the portfolio is where nearly all the work sits.
Protected titles: “Clinical scientist”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

Your specialism
Clinical science spans many specialisms — clinical biochemistry, medical physics, clinical engineering, genetics, immunology, audiology and more. Equivalence is assessed within a specialism, so establishing which one you are applying under comes first.

The route is evidence-led: you build a portfolio mapping your training, practice and competence against the relevant UK standards. It is detailed work, and it is what determines the outcome.

What is the route to HCPC registration as a clinical scientist?▾

How is a clinical scientist different from a biomedical scientist?▾
Both are HCPC-regulated but they are separate professions with separate titles and routes. Biomedical scientists work primarily in diagnostic laboratory practice; clinical scientists work at a scientific-specialist level across specialisms including medical physics, genetics and clinical biochemistry, typically with more responsibility for interpretation, development and service leadership.
What goes into the portfolio?▾
Evidence mapped against the standards for your specialism — your training, your clinical and scientific practice, competences demonstrated, and professional practice. It is substantial, structured work, and building it properly is the bulk of the effort on this route.
Does a PhD qualify me automatically?▾
No. A PhD is often part of a strong application but it does not by itself evidence the applied clinical competence the standards require. Research-only backgrounds usually need to show clinical healthcare practice alongside.
What English requirement applies to clinical scientists?▾
The general HCPC standard: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, within HCPC’s validity window. We confirm the current requirement during your eligibility check.
How long does the equivalence route take?▾
Longer than a direct HCPC application, because the portfolio has to be assembled and assessed. It is best planned as a project over months rather than weeks, and it is worth confirming current timescales before you begin.
