HCPC registration for physiotherapists

Physiotherapy is one of the largest groups on the HCPC register, and it is the route most Indian-trained physios take into the NHS and UK private practice. HCPC assesses your BPT or MPT against its Standards of Proficiency for physiotherapists — not against an Indian syllabus — so what matters is how clearly your degree and clinical hours evidence each standard.

Protected titles: “Physiotherapist” and “Physical therapist”. In the UK it is a criminal offence to use a protected title without being on the HCPC register.

What HCPC looks at in a physiotherapist application

The Standards of Proficiency are profession-specific — these are the areas that decide most physiotherapists files.

Breadth of clinical placements

HCPC wants to see that your training covered the core areas — musculoskeletal, neurology, cardiorespiratory and, in most curricula, paediatrics and community practice. Thin coverage in one area is the most common reason a physiotherapy file gets questioned.

Supervised clinical hours

Your transcripts and internship records need to show substantial supervised practice, not just theory credits. Indian BPT programmes usually include a compulsory rotatory internship — that internship certificate matters more than most applicants expect.

Autonomous practice and assessment

UK physiotherapists assess, diagnose and set treatment plans independently. HCPC looks for evidence that your training and experience prepared you to work at that level of autonomy.

Continuing professional development

Any post-qualification courses, specialist certifications or documented CPD strengthen a file, particularly if you qualified some years ago or have had a career break.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian BPT graduate register with HCPC?

In most cases yes — a recognised four-and-a-half-year BPT including the compulsory rotatory internship is the qualification the majority of Indian applicants use. What decides the outcome is not the degree name but whether your transcripts and internship records evidence HCPC’s Standards of Proficiency across the core clinical areas. We check that with you before you apply.

Is an MPT needed for HCPC registration, or is BPT enough?

A BPT with a completed internship is generally sufficient — an MPT is not a requirement. A masters can help where your BPT placements were thin in a particular area, because it adds documented supervised practice, but plenty of registrants are BPT-only.

What IELTS score do physiotherapists need for HCPC?

HCPC generally looks for IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5, or OET Grade B in every sub-test, taken within the validity window HCPC specifies. Requirements do get updated, so we confirm the current standard for you during your eligibility check rather than working from an old figure.

Will I have to sit a Test of Competence as a physiotherapist?

Not everyone does. HCPC asks for one when it cannot satisfy itself from your documents that your training meets the standards — most often where placement coverage in an area like neurology or cardiorespiratory is unclear. A well-evidenced application is the single biggest factor in avoiding it.

What NHS band will I start on as a newly registered physiotherapist?

Most newly registered physiotherapists enter the NHS at Band 5 on the Agenda for Change scale, with rotational posts across specialties. Pay scales are revised, so it is worth checking the current NHS figures when you start applying for roles.

Do I need to keep my Indian state council registration active?

It is not an HCPC requirement, but keeping it active is sensible — a current registration and good-standing certificate from your state council is straightforward supporting evidence, and awkward to obtain in a hurry once it has lapsed.
